The Biomedical Engineering (BME) department provides a comprehensive, management and maintenance service for medical systems and technology for the acute and community services of South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust.
Specialist Biomedical Engineers provide advice on the safe and effective use of medical devices to consultants, nursing staff, patients and carers.
In addition to the repair and maintenance of medical devices, managers and clinical staff are provided with advice and recommendations related to trial, evaluation and purchase requirements based upon clinical needs for a wide variety of devices from simple blood pressure devices to full networked patient monitoring systems, life support and diagnostic medical devices. The Trust has in excess of eleven thousand medical devices in use in departments such as the Coronary Care Unit, Special Care Baby Unit, Operating Theatres, Intensive Therapy Unit, Emergency, District Nursing, Podiatry and Health Centres.
The service is also responsible for the management of telecommunications including telephony systems, paging and radio networks.
