This is a 24/7 adult service which responds to deteriorating patients within the hospital outside of the Intensive Care Unit (ITU) or the High Dependency Unit (HDU). This involves examining patients and making recommendations regarding their treatment in order to avoid the patient being admitted to critical care or ensuring they are admitted in a timely fashion.
Part of the role includes assisting with the transfer of critically ill patients either to another hospital or within the Trust. They also provide support and advice to both staff and patients who have a tracheostomy or a laryngectomy.
Teaching is an aspect of the role which can be done in a formal setting or at a bedside. The rehabilitation of the critically ill patient has the involvement of the team, this is done by visiting patients after they are discharged form ITU/HDU for as long as their condition dictates and giving them a discharge pack of useful information to promote their recovery.
The team are based at South Tyneside District Hospital.
The Critical Care Outreach Team can be contacted by telephoning (0191) 404100 and ask for bleep 110.
