The Emergency Assesment Unit (often referred to as EAU) is based on Ward 6 in the Ingham Wing of South Tyneside District Hospital. The EAU assesses emergency medical, surgical and orthopaedic patients referred by their GP and the Emergency Department.
On arrival you will be greeted by a member of staff.
You will be assessed by one of our nursing team. During this assessment you will have observations taken, (temperature, blood pressure etc.) and personal details, medical history and current medication will be recorded. Your nurse may also commence investigations such as blood tests and ordering an ECG (heart tracing).
You will now wait to see a doctor. How long this takes will depend on your arrival time, as well as the relative urgency of your condition. We will try to keep you informed of how long this may be but aim for everyone to be reviewed within 1 hour. At this point further investigations may be ordered, i.e. x-rays / scans.
You will also be seen by a senior doctor or Consultant Acute Care Physician who will review your prescribed treatment and care. He/she will either admit you to a specialist inpatient ward or discharge you.
