The Family Nurse Programme is an evidenced based, preventative programme offered to young parents in Sunderland, Gateshead and South Tyneside, who are having their first baby. Pregnancy and birth are key points when most families are highly receptive to support and extra help and by intervening early this programme offers some of the most vulnerable young parents a better chance in life. It begins early in pregnancy and continues until the baby is 2years old. Its goals are to improve antenatal health, improve child health and development and the parents’ economic self-sufficiency. It is a nurse led intensive home visiting programme delivered by specially trained nurses.
