Our Services

General Surgery

The Department of General Surgery is based at South Tyneside District Hospital and provides the following services:

  • Acute emergency surgical care under the direct supervision of a Consultant 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year
  • Outpatient consultations for referrals from primary care
  • Specialist opinion and treatment for inpatient referrals from other departments
  • Day surgery (patients discharged the same day of operation)
  • Endoscopy for both diagnosis and treatment of various gastrointestinal disorders
  • Advanced laparoscopic surgery for complicated gallstone disease and reflux disorders
  • Planned major bowel laparoscopic (key hole) surgery
  • Planned major hernia surgery

The Consultant Surgeons work closely with a team of junior doctors, specialist cancer nurses as well as trained nurses in operation theatres, wards, endoscopy and outpatient departments. This core team is supported by a group of pain specialists, dietitians, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and clerical, administration and managerial staff all of whom are integral to the multidisciplinary approach that defines modern surgical practice.

Inpatient care is based on separate male (Ward 9) and female (Ward 3) wards with day case surgery being provided from Ward 4. The department makes a significant contribution to the endoscopy services in the hospital which include diagnostic gastroscopy and colonoscopy, ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography), insertion of oesophageal, duodenal and colonic stents, balloon dilatation of strictures and pH monitoring and motility studies of the oesophagus.

South Tyneside District Hospital occupies a place in the top 10 per cent of hospitals in the country that provide treatment of bowel cancer by laparoscopic (key hole) surgery. The hospital is one of the few in the North East that routinely performs advanced laparoscopic procedures such as single-port surgery (a single small incision on the abdomen) for conditions such as bowel cancer, large bowel polyps, Crohn’s disease and colitis. Its specialist surgical care package called STEP (South Tyneside Enhanced Recovery Pathway) has revolutionised the care of patients undergoing major bowel surgery resulting in a significant reduction in the length of hospital stay and a quicker recovery. The department has also gained reputation as a one-stop specialist centre that offers the entire range of endoscopic and surgical treatment options for the management of gall stone disease.
