The Mortuary is a public mortuary and provides a service to South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust, the public and Her Majesty’s Coroner for the area.
The deceased reside within the mortuary and are cared for with dignity and respect until cause of death can be determined, documentation complete and funeral arrangements can be made.
If required this is where a post mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death. Post mortems are carried out when cause of death is unknown or when further information would be helpful to support or treat living relatives, for example in a hereditary illness. Consent for a post mortem will be sought prior to the event unless it is an order from the coroner (consent is not required for a coroner’s post mortem).
There is a chapel of rest within the mortuary and viewings of the deceased by relatives can be arranged via Patient Welfare by appointment only.
The Mortuary is based at South Tyneside District Hospital, Harton Lane, South Shields NE34 0PL
