Nutrition & Dietetic Service - South Tyneside

The Nutrition and Dietetic service offers effective and evidence based treatment for the residents of South Tyneside with nutrition related diseases for the residents of South Tyneside.

Registered Dieticians are qualified health professionals that assess, diagnose and treat diet and nutritional  problems. Dieticians use the most up to date public health and scientific research in food, health and disease, which they translate into practical advice to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.  The team consists of 10 state registered dieticians and we provide the service in both a hospital and community setting.

Dietetic services provided in hospital:

  • Assessment support and advice to all in patient requiring dietetic input in a range of specialities including Oncology, Paediatrics, Gastroenterology, Stroke and Diabetes.
  • Therapeutic diets for those people who would benefit from special diets.
  • Nutritional support to those patients unable to meet their nutritional requirements.
  • Training to hospital staff

Dietetic service provided in the community:

  • Nutritional support for Nursing and Care home residents.
  • Diabetes management. 1:1 in GP surgeries or group programmes e.g. DESMOND.
  • General and specialist e.g. paediatric, coeliac out-patient clinics
  • Domiciliary visits for house bound patients
  • Specialist advice to people receiving home enteral feeding
  • Training to community staff
