Helping you cope with bereavement
The staff at South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust understand that you may be feeling bewildered and distressed at this time. We express our sympathy to you and your family and assure you that we will offer support and assistance at this time.
We aim to provide some useful advice and guidance to help guide you through some of the practical stages following your bereavement.
What to do first
Our Patient Welfare Officer will contact you the next working day to confirm when you are able to collect the documentation needed and will agree an appointment time suitable for you.
Please report to the Main Reception in the Ingham Wing when you attend for your appointment and the Patient Welfare officer will meet you there.
Registering the death
This must be done within five working days; please contact the Registry Office (0191) 427 7000 to make an appointment with them.

Help with Funeral Costs
Some assistance towards funeral expenses may be available to you. The Patient Welfare Officer can provide further advice and information about this.
Grief and loss is an individual journey and you may feel a range of emotions during this time. Your own GP or nurse is available to listen and help, wherever possible. Some GP surgeries offer bereavement counselling at the practice.
The chaplaincy service is available 24 hours a day, every day. If you wish to contact one of the chaplains or someone from your own faith please contact the hospital switchboard on (0191) 4041000.
