The service is provided for adult patients awaiting elective surgery in the specialities of orthopaedics, general surgery, gynaecology, urology and other day case procedures. The service aims to minimise risk, promote patient safety and facilitate a smooth pathway in the pre, peri, post-operative and post discharge periods. This is achieved by ensuring that all patients are physically fit for the operation, psychologically prepared for admission, surgery, recovery and rehabilitation, with commencement of early discharge planning. This helps to form a partnership with patients / carers reducing anxieties and helping them to make informed choices about their care.
The service also facilitates reduction in cancelled surgery / length of hospital stay, effective bed management and efficient use of staffing / non-staffing resources.
Specialist nursing sisters with extended roles provide this service and they work both autonomously and as part of the hospital team. Other healthcare colleagues support the service, including anaesthetists, cardiologists and specialist teams.
